Case Studies

We have collected details of over 40 farmers who have taken on the fast watering techniques and published their water saving results which can be seen here: Results from Fast Watering

Case Study No 1. Garry Flanagan, Cobram

“I was considering spray irrigation when John conducted a trial with his test pump.  We grew a crop of maize with 2.8ML compared with 8ML for every HA. I now see a huge potential for fast watering irrigation in all surface irrigation areas.”

Case Study No 2. Darryl Lukies, Katamatite

"I lasered leveled my 200 acre wheat paddock, and fitted it with six foot wide Padman stops, I irrigated twice with the advice of my agronomist, to achieve a yield of 8 tonne wheat crop.  It has worked a treat.”

Case Study No 3. John Padman, Strathmerton

“We grew 18 tonne of Maize with 5ML per HA of water. We planted maize on the 23rd December with 10 waterings. What we have demonstrated if you water fast enough you can efficiently irrigate a sandy soil.”

Case Study No 4. Mark and Monique Bryant, Kaarimba

The fast watering technique and the advice from his agronomist, to always do a second watering four days after the first, no matter what! Mark said.

“After sowing rye and shaftal on the 2nd March, then grazing it on the 23rd and a further grazing on the 5th April the Rye measured approx 22cm."

“I have cut my watering time from 24 hours to 12hours on the 8 HA site."

"Last year I stopped measuring at 12 tonnes of feed per HA using 4.2 MG water. The key is the Padman stops and the 4 day second watering.”

“Reduced flow rates and water efficiency has impacted our decision to upgrade our current surface irrigation system.”

Fast flow irrigation and soil moisture monitoring coupled with portable bay monitors and radio controlled automation has removed the guesswork from overwatering.

A 18 hectare paddock in 2007 with the same perennial crop took 109.42 hours to water – using 3.3 mgl/ha.

In 2009 the same paddock took 41.68 hours to water – using 1.47 mgl/ha

“The results show a 55% water savings and the kilograms of seed produced per hectare are above average for the season.”

Case Study No. 6 Geoff Horrocks, Yalca

    Geoff Horrocks, Yalca

Geoff Horrocks set up a network of 20, 10 foot Padman Stops throughout his surface channel system.

Reducing the watering time by 30-40% on the annual grasses, corn and Lucerne.

“Last season my corn achieved around 19 tonnes of dry matter per hectare,”

“Productivity gains are around 20pc, I can see that result getting better as  I improve the soil.” Geoff said.
